On Tuesday, January 30th, The Remsenburg Association participated in a meeting to explore solutions to the issue of traffic and pedestrian hazards in our community. The meeting was organized by Remsenburg-Speonk School District Superintendent Denise Sullivan. In attendance were Supt. Sullivan, School Board President and Vice President Kevin Toolan and Mary Greiner, Southampton Town Highway Superintendent Charles McArdle, Southampton Town Councilmember Michael Iasilli and other members of the community.
Among the town highway measures discussed were:
- Placing radar speed signs at the boundaries of the school zone on mill road.
- Placing a crosswalk and enhanced pedestrian crossing signs near the corner of South Phillips Avenue and South Country Road.
- Extending the sidewalk to across from the post office to permit the construction of a crosswalk there.
- Creating a 3 way stop at the corner of Mill Road and South Country Road, along with an extended sidewalk along Mill Road and crosswalk markings.
- Additional sidewalk connecting the school to Montauk Highway and crosswalks there.
In a follow up email, Superintendent McArdle stated that he was moving ahead with all these measures.
In addition to the town initiatives, the Remsenburg Association has purchased another radar speed sign and will be installing it to serve eastbound traffic on South Country Road in the coming months.
Parking for meetings held at the church make it very difficult traveling from Basket Neck Lane on To South Country Rd. Attendees do not leave enough distance from the corner needed to see oncoming traffic. What can be done?
